As the fall semester begins to wind down, many students are starting to feel the crunch, between scrambling to finish papers and pulling all-nighters to cram for that next big exam.  Accordingly, NYU has equipped its students with countless resources to turn to when in need of a little extra academic help or support.

If writing just isn’t one of your finer skills, the NYU Writing Center is a smart tool to utilize when the last few pages of an essay appear elusive. The center provides you with a respectful environment to share your work, which can be scary and slightly intimidating. According to their webpage, “it is a place where one-on-one teaching and learning occur, as students work closely with EWP [Expository Writing Program] faculty at every stage of the writing process and on any piece of writing except for exams.” With appointments lasting about 45 minutes, the writing consultants make it a priority to improve your current paper and develop lasting skills. Appointments should be scheduled at least a week in advance of a due date, to leave ample time to edit and revise your work. Appointments can be made online.

The University Learning Center’s (UCL)  primary goal is to “assist students in developing the knowledge base, skills, and strategies that will help them to become confident, independent and active learners.” Peer tutoring is offered at both of their locations: UHall specializes in the humanities, social sciences, and math, while the Academic Resource Center (ARC) specializes in science. Group review sessions are also offered, on subjects ranging from foreign languages to organic chemistry.

Academic Skills Workshops offer students the chance to build upon skills outside of the classroom.  There are a variety of programs offered each year in October, including “Perfecting Your Presentation/Public Speaking,” and “Citations: Save Time, Cite Effectively.” Or, if your schedule is pretty packed, and these all seem a bit too time consuming, you can improve your time management and study skills just by visiting the links on their webpage.

If it isn’t specific academic help you’re in need of and just some support about the direction of your academic and professional life, don’t hesitate to reach out to your advisor. It’s his or her job to help you “design and pursue educational and career objectives,” so don’t be shy. While you’re there, don’t forget to ask them about unique academic opportunities that can help shape your NYU education and experience. The Wasserman Career Center is another great resource to turn to if you’re stressed about life after college.

Next time the going gets tough, be sure to remember all of the resources available, and help both your stress levels and your grade by utilizing them.
